Walk For Women's Cancer

August 24, 2020

I gave myself an almighty fright on the weekend.

I only have 5 weeks to go until I walk my 35kms for The Harry Perkins Institute for Medical Research's Walk For Women's Cancer

On September 26, my 73 year old mother and I are challenging ourselves to walk 35km in one day as part of the Hawaiian Walk for Women’s Cancer. That is damn frightening for us as neither of us have never ever walked that far!

We're doing it to raise much needed funds for women’s cancer research. My mother, who is the oldest participant, is still in recovery from her own breast cancer journey and I think she is one of the bravest women to be attempting this walk.

The walk was to take place in Perth, WA, but with COVID-19 firmly disrupting the world I will now walk around Sydney's Bay Run while my mother completes her's in our hometown of Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. This makes her also the person with one of the longest distances between her and the main event in Perth.

There is so much more to be done to ensure that women all across Australia, New Zealand and beyond – our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loved ones – living with cancer stay with us for as long as possible.

Both my mother and I are training (and fundraising) in the lead up to the event. We have nearly reached our goal of $15,000 which far exceeds our original goal of $5,000. I am really excited about this as the funds will go directly to an amazing organisation.

I have five women who are very dear to me and are my inspirations. I talk about Briony, Alison, Christine, Linda and my mum, Dianne, often when I talk about The Perkins and the work that they do. You will find their stories on my Walk For Women's Cancer profile.

I am so grateful for everyone's support. If you are in Sydney on the 26th September and do feel inclined to do a casual 35km's ... please reach out. The more the merrier!
